Weird!  I use several fully updated KDE3.5 Jaunty systems and have not
experienced this issue.  Those updates aren't even KDE packages.

Is it possible that any system files got corrupted somehow (ailing
hardware, recent "hard" power off, etc.)?  KDE3.5 stresses certain
graphics and system routines that Gnome may not even use.
