Hi Tim, On Hardy it seems to work properly with the script. (Seems I was mistaken on how it exactly works in my earlier mail.) After I used kdmtheme on Hardy I got an extra file /etc/default/kde.d/30_kubuntu_default_settings, which contained the settings for the new theme. In Karmic, kdmtheme-kde3 changes the file /etc/kde/kdm/kdmrc directly however, which doesn't work together with the init script. I also noticed an extra kubuntu_02_confchanges.diff patch for kdmtheme in the Hardy source which is not Karmic source. I guess this may change kdmtheme so it works with the scheme from the init script and kubuntu-default-settings.
