Thanks Tim. That wasn't the solution, but it led me to the solution. Poking around those config files, I found that kopete was listed in kwallet as "Always Deny", so of course it wasn't getting in. I don't know how that happened, but it isn't happening anymore. I wouldn't have found it without your suggestion. Thanks Michael
